Topic 10 – Citizenship Online + Group Presentations
It was interesting listening to the groups talk about their respective inquiry topics. I learned about GIS, fitness technology in the classroom, old school vs. new school projects, using AI for marking, film in the classroom, stop motion, slido, and the use of digital platforms for PHE.
My Take on Film in the Classroom
One of my favourite topics was using film in the classroom! My subject areas are math and physics and I remember watching a few movies in those classes in high school but I think that there is a huge untapped market for utilizing film in a physics class especially. I took a course in my final year of my undergrad titled the Physics of Science Fiction and I learned more in that class about practical physics than every other course I took. I think the reason behind it is because it was fun, engaging, and involved picking a part poorly depicted physics in famous films. In order to analyze a film, a certain level of physics knowledge is required, and this knowledge is fairly transferable to real-life situations. My one critique would be finding appropriate films to demonstrate different physics concepts – for example, Fast and Furious may not be the best option to show a high school class due to the language and violence portrayed (it is rated PG-13 so maybe it is alright?). Movies like this tend to have many examples of bad physics and are the most interesting to analyze.
Here is a link to the F9 trailer if you are interested in the movie that I chose to analyze for the class I mentioned above.
